How to Style a Corset Belt: 3 Gothic Looks

Belts are the piece I reach for first, and judging by your orders, you do too. A corset belt is the quickest way to change a whole outfit: it pulls everything in at the waist, gives you shape, and turns a plain dress into something that looks deliberate. Here are three looks built around belts we actually have in the shop, worn the way I like to wear them.

Why a corset belt (and not a full corset)?

A corset belt sits over your clothes instead of under them. You get the waist and the silhouette without lacing yourself into a full corset, and you can wear it over dresses, shirts and knits you already own. It is the easiest way to make your wardrobe feel darker without buying a new one.

Look 1: Ashira over a white dress

The Ashira Moth Waist Belt from Restyle is my favourite belt right now. The moth wings are embroidered in dusty rose, smoky beige and warm brown on black vegan leather, and over a white dress they look almost like an old herbarium drawing. Choose a loose, flowing white dress, maxi or midi, so the belt is the only structured thing in the outfit. Let the tassel cords hang free.

Finish with black boots and a wide-brim hat, or keep it soft with bare arms and silver jewellery. This is the look I would wear to a summer market or a midsummer party.

Look 2: Ashira over a black dress

The same belt reads completely differently over black. The rose and brown wings come forward, and the whole look gets darker and more witchy. A black off-shoulder dress with sheer sleeves works beautifully: the belt gives the waist shape and the dress does the rest.

Add a velvet choker like the Cathedralis Velvet Collar and a moth backpack such as the Obsidian Moth Backpack, and you have an outfit that works from a café in the afternoon to a concert in the evening.

Look 3: Rosarium over black lace

For the most dramatic version, go black on black. The Rosarium Corset Belt has laser-cut rose window details in sleek vegan leather over a layer of black velvet, so you see the texture even when everything is black. Boning gives it structure, and the lace-up back lets you adjust the fit.

Wear it over a sheer or lace dress, a deep V-neck, or anything with long, dramatic sleeves. Silver rings and a dark lip finish it off. This is the look for a goth night out.

Three quick styling tips

  • Place it at your natural waist, the narrowest point, not on your hips.
  • Keep the base simple. A plain dress lets the belt do the talking.
  • Measure before you order. Each belt has its own size range in centimetres on the product page.
